COMMERCIAL

CUSTOMS RETQBNS. The amount of revenue received at the Custom House, Wanganui, on goods cleared for home consumption, during the week ended Saturday, October 28, was £412 11s lOd. This amount is made up as follows : —

The past, week's revenue shows a balance of nearly £14 over that of the previous period, which in its turn showed a balance of £15 in advance of the week ended 14th inst. This gradual improvement, even though slight, is still reassuring, and we have every reason to believe that the advance in the Customs revenue, which we have now the pleasure of noting for three consecutive weeks, will be maintained. It is not by any means improbable that our recognised weekly standard of £500 will thus before long be again reached and exceeded. Wherein general commercial matters are concerned, the past week showed a slightly improved tendency, but the markets — we refer to all classes of stocks— are still supplied in excess of demand. Money has been, since our previous quotation, easier to a degree just perceptible. The following is the number and tonnage of vessels which have entered and cleared at the port of Wanganui during the week ended the 28th Oct., 1876 :— Entered : 12 vessels; tons, 725. Cleared : 9 vessels ; tons, 563. Mr W. Dale, of Carlyle, reports having held a very successful sale of sections in the new township of Woodville, on Thursday last, immediately after the Government land sale. Sections in Ball Road realised the highest prices^ viz., from £4 12s 6d to £10 10s each; nine-being sold at an average of £7 12s. Sections in Hursthouse Road averaged £6 5s each, and sections in other streets fetched from £2 15s to £6 2s 6d. During Friday, some 15 sections were disposed of privately at anadvanceon auction rates. The Government land sale' of the OtoiaOpaku block can only.be regarded in the light of an unqualified success, the whole amount realised being £5, 1 00.
