COMMERCIAL

Chronicle Office, Monday Morning. Trade for . the last fortnight has been ■- rather quiet, but that could only be expected this season of the year. Stocks in holders' hands are more than equal to the demand. «■ Owing to the scarcity of wheat in the Southern markets, flour has advanced to £16 10a for bags, and £16 for sacks ; and last advices from the South. state- a still-further advance is expected. Oats have advanced, and are now ■-quoted affrGmSs to 3s 2d; good samples are moving off rapidly at quotations ; inferior oats are unsaleable. Oatmeal, £15. Brandies —Hennessey's and Martoll's, 9a to 93 6d ; case, 60s to 63s ; other inferior brandies are difficult to quote. Rum, 30 0.p., 5s for Lemon Hart's, and 5s 6d for Red Star, and R.W.P; Whiskey, 5s 6d to 7s 6d. Sugars, . from 40s, for-yellow, to 445 ; and. 45s to 46s for I.C. and second white. Groceries and . oilman's stores overstocked, and prices leave no profit to importers. Kerosene has participated, in the advance lately notified, and is now quoted at 3s for Devoe's. Corrugated iron is in good demand, at £33 to £36 for second and best brands ; fencing wire, £22 103 for No. 6 ; and £24 10s for No. 8. Wool packs have been in active demand. There are none in first hands, stocks having been cleared out at 3s 6d to 3s 8d ; large parcels cannot now be had under 3s 9d to 3s 10s for full weights. Although matters commercial, at present, present anything but an animated aspect, yet there is gocd reason to believe that the worst is over, and that a change from the present state of depression will soon make itself apparent. The Government sale of contractors' plant will be held to-morrow, by Mr Beaven, at the railway station, on the opposite side of the river. Full particulars will be seen by reference to our advertising columns. The sale commences at 2 o'clock. To-morrow, Mr Chadwick holds a cattle sale at Turakina, particulars of which are specified elsewhere.
