THE WANGANUI CHRONICLE AND RANGITIKEI MESSENGER. “ Verite sans peur.” WANGANUI, FEB. 27, 1862.

We are informed that the good people of Wellington are making great preparations for the reception of Sir George Grey. The, day ;isto be a general holiday, shore boats are to be equipped in man-of-war style under the superintendence of Capt. Carkeek ■to land His Excellency and suite with all honor. They-will come ashore where the new wharf is to be built. . Here a congratulatory address will be presented, and His Excellency will' then proceed to Government' House in a .carriage drawn by six horses, got up in the most dashing style, and followed in procession by all the vehicles that can be mustered. The Militia are to turn out as a guard of honour, together with tlie Volunteer Band. There is to be a public dinner in the Oddfellows’ fjHall,.: and the. ladies are to give a ball. Such we understand, was the programme likely to be fixed on at the public meeting that was to be held last Monday evening in Wellington to make arrangements for the auspicious occasion. Now, we mention this hot as a bit of news, but in order that Wanganui may be induced to bestir herself in time to prepare for giving a reception to the Governor worthy of him and of herself. Whatever may be the opinions entertained by the inhabitants regarding the. probability of a successful result from the measures, now being taken by Sir Geo. Grey, all must feel that he deserves their gratitude for his good intentions, for his indefatigable exertions, and for the success which has already attended his labours. We believe that the road at which the military are working in Waikato passes through some native reserves, and that, it has encroached On the cultivated grounds therein more than the old track did, yet the natives merely demand compensation for the ground taken. This shews.such an altered state of within a short time, as gives reason to hope for the ultimate success of Sir Geo. Qrey’s measures," even though the. impetuous and rude Te Heu Heu is n,ow Matutaere’s right hand man. But without anticipating too much and looking only at what has already been done, in the occupation of native districts by the new Commissioners and. laws, and, at the vigorous exertions that have beenmade to give confidence and peace to the country, there - can be no doubt that the reception giveh'"to' him should be cordial and honorable, - He comes overland; and witji the Militia, and Volunteers, both the rifles ..and cavalry, wlio might turn out to do him honour, the freemasons and the oddfellows in costume and other; public bodies, • official and non-official, a reception might b<? given him much more effective even than that of Wellington. It ; is now nearly three years since our late Governor.'was here. We ought to be visited more frequently, and a little attention 6f this kindpaid on His Excellency’s first visit during his present

tenure of office may have a good effect in inducing him to come here as often as a regard to public duty will permit. Would it not be well to call ‘d meeting .of the inhabitan ts to say whether a public reception ought to be given, and if so, to appoint a committee to make the necessary arrangements]
