The China news is not of much interest. From the Overland China. Mail of 17th August we quote as follows :

The news from Pekin is, as usual, a little uncertain. Some accounts report the Emperor to he ill—probably wishing so to explain his long absence from the capital; other reports say that he intends returning in Ootober. , The Shantung rebels seem to have been kept well in check during the past fortnight. The temperature at Pekin has been as high as 106 in the shade; the nights wore cold. It is not yet quite certain that, the allied force will evacuate Canton in Ocas reported some time back.
