Silver in California. —The recent silver discoveries in California are calculated to produce some effect'on the money markets of the world. It seems that the Washoe mines can yield 500 tons of ore a.month, worth from 2000 to 4000 dollars a ton. Scientific men state that the great silver veins, which have constituted the wealth of Mexico for more than a couple of centuries, pursue a north-westerly course from the mining regions of Mexico, through Arizona and Sonora, and finally crop out in California, and that the wonder is that they were not discovered and worked before the gold mines. Letters from San Francisco describe the excitement there as intense and increasing—-as might well proceed from a prospect of a new staple export, yielding 20,000,000 to 25,000,000 dollars a year. ; — New York Herald. RELATION OF AMERICAN CHURCHES AND Slavery. —6oo,ooo human beings are actually the property of professing Christians and members of churches in the United States—• many of these slaves being held by the highest dignitaries of the church—-bishops, moderators of assemblies, principals of colleges, professors, ministers, elders, and deacons. Prince of Wale*’ Visit to Canada.— In the programme of his Canadian tour we believe that no provision has been made foi his crossing into our territory, or for visiting any of our ports. “It is manners to wait to be asked,” says the Irish proverb, and no doubt bis discreet mother and her advisers are acting in strict deference to that elegant axiom. ■Moreover, they may labour under grave doubts as to how a scion of royalty would be received by the New York democracy. They little know what sucking doves the latter can become when they are called upon to make an extra display of gentility. Seriously speakiug, we'ought not to allow the Prince to quit our American shores without affording him an opportunity of judging the Yankee nation and Yankee institutions with his own eyes. Wa\ see no reason why Congress should not pass a resolution tendering the Prince the hospitali-. ties of the country, and providing the means to give it suitable effect. A hill has been introduced into the United States Senate for tiie purpose of abolishing polygamy in Utah.
