CARTERTON
GRASS FIRES TWO OUTBREAKS YESTERDAY ("Times-Age” Special.) Members of the Carterton Fire Brigade were yesterday afternoon called to Clareville to fight fires in a paddock adjacent to the Clareville railway station and at the racecourse. The fires occurred shortly after a train had passed. The fire at the racecourse was soon got under control, but the one in the paddock on the southern side of the railway station spread for a considerable distance before being stopped. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs Norman Every, of Hokitika, are visiting Carterton and are the guests of Mr and Mrs R. H. Every, Garrison Street. Able Seaman A. E. Hack is-staying with Mr Hack, of Rhodes Street.. Miss R. Everett, of Auckland, is visiting Carterton. Mr and Mrs Mellisham of Levin, are the guests of Mr and Mrs A. Knutson, Clifton Avenue. Mr and Mrs Parrant, Petone, were visitors to Carterton yesterday. Mr 'and Mrs D. Jackson, Petone, are staying with Mr and Mrs J. Newbould. High Street, Carterton. The death occurred at Wanganui yesterday of Mr Herbert Waters, at the age of 89 years. He was formerly a wellknown figure in Carterton, where he lived for many years, having been employed at Messrs W. Booth & Co’s sawmill.
Mesdames Mead (Auckland), King (Auckland), W. Patterson (Auckland) and Miss Trixie Corkhill (Wellington) are.the guests of Mrs A. E. Booth, Park Road, Carterton. The esteem in which the late Mrs Anna Erskine was held was shown by the large attendance at “her funeral held yesterday. Many beautiful wreaths were forwarded, some coming from Auckland. Canterbury, Wellington, Palmerston North and Marton. A short service was conducted at the residence by the Rev. W. J. Couling, who subsequently officiated at the graveside. The pallbearers were Messrs Alt Parker, A. Griffin, J. Lenihan, J. Gorman, A. H. Krahagen and J. Freddy. Senseless Shooters In the West Taratahi district this week some shooters fired. bullets into rural letter boxes, automobile signs and gates. They did not stop at this, bitt deliberately blocked up a water race and flooded the land in the vicinity. This caused the races below the block to go dry and farmers for many miles were without water for their stock. The water race overseer was put to considerable trouble to locate the cause of the stoppage. The police are giving attention to the matter. Municipal Band The Carterton Municipal Silver Band will play a programme of music in High Street tonight. The members will then adjourn to the band room, where they will be entertained at supper and prizes awarded to those boys who have shown the most improvement in playing during the past 12 months. BOWLING CLUB The following games have been played recently by lady members for the Hughan Buttons: —Mrs Martin and Miss Armstrong (holders) beat Miss. Lamb and Mrs Robinson, 18/17; Mrs Colson and Mrs Thompson beat Mrs Martin and Miss Armstrong, 21/19.
