CHOICE OFFERED
TO SOLDIERS ON LEAVE FROM PACIFIC. WAR SERVICE OR DESIGNATED EMPLOYMENT. ' (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The War Cabinet has decided that all members of the recently returned draft from the Pacific area, except a limited number retained in the Army will be made available for essential industry and the men have been informed by the Controller of Manpower, Mr H. L. Bockett, who also told them that they would have the option of accepting the employment offered to them or remaining in the Army, to enable others to be released. Single men, and married men without children, who were in Category A, and certain specialists would be remobilised in the Army on the expiry of their 28 days’ leave. All others will be placed on 'indefinite leave, without pay. Mr Bockett’s advice states that men not being remobilised should interview the manpower officer in their home district, to discuss arrangements regarding employment. Men not prepared to accept employment to which they are allocated by the manpower officer would be remobilised to release others who were prepared to accept employment in freezing works and other essential industries of high industrial priority. The Defence Minister, Mr F. Jones, commenting on this arrangement, said that, while married men With children who are in Category A are being released, if prepared to accept employment, they are liable for remobilisation again when required.
