Delivery of “Times-Age.” During the school holiday period many boys are engaged in essential farm work and some difficulty may be experienced in the delivery of the “Times-Age.” Until the position improves, it is possible that some papers may arrive late. Subscribers who receive their papers at an unduly late hour should advise the office. Maori Peeping Tom. When retiring to bed about 11.30 o’clock on Tuesday night, Mr W. R. Martin, Akina Street, Hastings, noticed what he thought to be a man move away from his bedroom window, and eventually he was responsible for the man’s arrest, an action which earned the commendation of the Bench in the Hastings Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The arrested man was a Maori soldier, Walter Kenneth Hapi, aged 21, and he was charged before Messrs F. C. Wilkinson and A. Dysart, J’s.P., with being on enclosed premises at 504 Akina Street without lawful excuse. He was sent to gaol for 14 days. Accused is a married man on two years’ probation for theft, and recently served a month for theft in Masterton. Preserved Meats. Considerable changes in the meat freezing and preserving industry owing to war conditions in the 1942-43 season are shown in the Abstract of Statistics. The most marked alteration has been the expansion in preserved meats, which increased by more than 74 per cent in quantity and 73 per cent in value over the previous season. The amount of frozen beef handled rose by 18 per cent while veal also showed a marked increase, due to the resumption in the export of bobby veal. Among the decreases were pork, 17 per cent; mutton, 6 per cent; lamb, 2 per cent. Against these, however, there should be taken into account the increase in mutton boned for canning or export, which is included in mutton pieces. Chess Tournament.
