CARTERTON
BOWLING PROGRESSIVE PAIRS TOURNEY. (“Times-Age” Special.) An enjoyable progressive pairs tournament was played on a very fast green at Carterton yesterday. The competitors included six Grey town players. Five games were played, the successful skip being Carl Larsen, 4 wins, 1 loss, 68 points. The runners-up were C. H. Barber, 4 wins, 1 loss, 64 points; W. Sorensen, 4 wins, 1 loss, 55 points. The winning lead was J. L. Harris, 5 wins, 70 points. P. Bain. 5 wins, 59 points, was runner-up.
OBITUARY MRS A. ERSKINE The death occurred yesterday of Mrs Anna Erskine, widow of Mr Wm. Erskine. The late Mrs Erskine, who was well known and highly respected, was born at Kaiapoi in 1857. After her marriage she and her husband went to reside in the King Country, hi those days the Maoris were very troublesome and on one occasion her life was threatened by a hefty Maori warrior who had entered her home. She defied the intruder and on her threatening to throw a pot of boiling water over him the Maori decamped. She took a keen interest in flowers and grew many fine blooms. Since her husband’s death in 1924 she has lived with her daughter, Mrs G. W. Busby. A resident for 50 years, she had made many friends in Carterton. She is survived by an only daughter, Mrs G. W. Busby, and one grandchild, Miss Beryl Busby. She has one surviving sister, Mrs Doig, of Christchurch.
The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving her late residence after a short service for the Clareville Cemetery at 1.30 o’clock. Drunkenness Charge. A first offender for drunkenness was convicted by Mr W. C. M. Sorensen. J.P., at the Carterton S.M. Court this morning. Personal Items. Mi’ J. Stewart, formerly on the staff of the “Wairarapa News,” who was a visitor to Carterton, has returned to Wellington. Mr W. Kay, of Wellington, is visiting Carterton and Masterton. He will return to Wellington after the Nev/ Year. Mr and Mrs H. Brown, of' Karori, who have been the guests of Mr and Mrs Harold King, Wyndham Street, Carterton, returned to Wellington yesterday. Miss Betsy Bennett, of Lower Hutt, is the guest of her grandparents, Mr and Mrs H. Merwood, of High Street. Later she will visit Mrs H. Gray, Greytown.
