An American destroyer was sunk and a coastal transport ship was damaged by ‘Japanese bombers during the landing operation at Cape Gloucester, Colonel Knox (Secretary to the Navy) announced. The losses occurred in an air attack about five hours after tne landing. They were the only American losses. As usual, the Japanese claims were fantastic. The Japanese claims included the sinking of two Allied cruisers and two transports. The Tokio radio says the Japanese garrison at Cape Gloucester is now engaged in fierce fighting.
