WEALTH OF BOOTY

BEING GATHERED IN BY RUSSIANS

In Kiev Bolge Battle Area

VITEBSK STRIPPED OF OUTER DEFENCES

EXPOSED ON ALL SIDES TO FINAL ASSAULT

(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, .12.55 p.m.) LONDON, December 27. The ground over which General Vatutin’s more northern units are again advancing is strewn with debris, heaps of German bodies and burnt-out tanks from the long-drawn struggle. Such huge quantities of booty are falling into the hands of the Russians that special collecting detachments are having difficulty' in counting the guns, mortars and vehicles, adds the British United Press correspondent. Vitebsk is now stripped of its outer defences on all sides and exposed for the final assault, says Reuter’s Moscow correspondent. Four Russian columns are advancing towards Vitebsk. One column, to the north-west, is less than three miles from Vitebsk. The city’s last rail exit is under systematic shellfire and is likely to be cut at any moment. Enemy reports are not optimistic about the situation on the Russian front. The Berlin radio said the Red Army in the Jitomir area is attacking with a force almost twice as strong as on the first day of the offensive. Captain Sertorius admitted that the Russians yesterday, north-east and south-west of Radomysl, gained ground. The German news agency stated that the Russians had broken into Shatsilki, 22 miles south-west of Jiobin. , . Tonight’s Soviet communique says the Red Army m the Vitebsk sector continued its offensive and occupied over 30 inhabited places. The Russians have cut the Vitebsk-Polotsk railway. Troops of the first Ukrainian front have developed their offensive and captured a hundred places in the Jitomir region, including Andrushevka, 20 miles south-east of Jitomir. North of Kirovgrad the Russians have repelled infantry and tank attacks.
