SEASON’S GREETINGS
FROM FORCES IN ITALY & PACIFIC. RECEIVED BY PRIME MINISTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “On behalf of all ranks of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Italy and the Middle East I send you and through you to the people of New Zeaalnd our greetings for Christmas and the New Year,” states a message received by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, , from LieutenantGeneral Sir Bernard Freyberg. “For many here,” he adds, “there will be little relaxation this Christmas time. But your men now fighting in Italy will accept this philosophically, confident as I believe they have the right to be, that 1944 will see one of our enemies defeated. May this be so and may the New Year bring happiness to us all.”
A message to the Prime Minister from the commander of the New Zealand forces in the Pacific, General Barrowclough, reads: “Many thanks for your very kind personal message which will give great encouragement to my troops who have served for a long time in a difficult and most uninteresting theatre of war. All ranks join with me in reciprocating your good wishes and in hoping that you have now completely recovered from your illness.” Other Christmas messages have been received by the Prime Minister from Admiral Halsey, the Federal Prime Minister (Mr J. Curtin), Genet al Smuts and the Premier of Tonga.
