A BUSY TIME AT THE POST AND TELEGRAPH OFFICE (“Times-Age” Special.) . Yestherday business was very brisk at the Carterton Post and Telegraph Office. Besides the abnormal inward and outward mail of parcels and letters, the counter staff was kept busy paying pensions etc. The members of the Post and Telegraph staffs deserve credit for the efficient manner in which they carried out their duties. ORDER OF DRUIDS JUVENILE LODGE MEETING. Presided over by Arch Druid Bro. S. Robinson, Pioneer Lodge No. 25, U.A.0.D., met on Tuesday last, there being a good attendance of members. Bro. Ron Goodin was installed into the office of Vice-Arch. Bard by Superintendent Bro. W. Fryer. Members who attended the installation meeting of Totara Lodge reported having had an enjoyable and instructive time, being well received by the adult lodge. The Arch. Druid extended the season’s greetings to members which were reciprocated by other officers. At the conclusion of the meeting members were entertained by the Superintendent. Christmas Carols Members of the Carterton Municipal Silver Band will play a programme of Christmas music on Friday evening in High Street, Carterton. Ordination Service An ordination service was conducted in the Cathedral Church of St. Paul at Wellington on Tuesday by the Bishop of Wellington, the Vicar of Carterton, the Rev W. F. Stent, being the preacher. The Rev F. M. Kempthorne, Vicar of Karori, was organist, and the candidates were presented by the Ven Archdeacon Bullock. Grass Fire On Tuesday after a train had passed near Mr Conwell’s property, south of the Brooklyn Road crossing, a grass fire broke out near the railway line. A breeze carried the fire across a paddock in close proximity to a large hay stack, which was saved from destruction by Mr D. Waterson and others. A railway gang has since been busy burning off grass on the sides of the railway line for a considerable distance along the Carterton section. A Hot Day The heat registered in Carterton yesterday afternoon at 3 o’clock was 'BO i degrees in the shade. Swimming Baths Since the opening of the Carterton municipal swimming baths a fortnight ago there has been a steady stream of adults and children present each day. The attendance constitutes a record for the period. Personal Items Word has been received in Carterton from Driver lan Bond, a prisoner of war who escaped from Italy, that he had reached Australia. REGENT THEATRE CHRISTMAS EVE SPECIAL. On Christmas Eve there will be shown an excellent double feature programme. ‘‘Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror” is a thrilling drama, featuring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, and “Sing for Your Supper,” an outstanding musical comedy. On Christmas night the drama “Belle Star” will be shown.
