BOROUGH AFFAIRS
CARTERTON COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT. HOSING RESTRICTIONS TO BE ENFORCED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council held last night, there being also present: Councillors E. McKenzie, W. A. Hart, O. W. Wolters, C. E. Stevens, Howard E. Jackson, C. J. DeLacey and W. R. Harry. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors H. Mortensen and L. M. Clark. A deputation, consisting of Messrs H. J. McKenzie and W. E. Knowles, of the Carterton School Committee, waited upon the council in connection with the school gate being left unlocked on Saturdays and Sundays. After having heard the views of the deputation the council, on the motion of Councillor H. E. Jackson, seconded by Councillor DeLacey, decided that no further action be taken in the matter. The treasurer’s report showed a credit balance in the district fund ac-( count of £919 3s 3d and in the gasworks account of £569 13s 3d. Correspondence from Mr J. O’Shea, solicitor’ to the Municipal Association of New Zealand, in regard to the proposed drainage loan was read and it was decided that the Mayor confer with Mr O’Shea at Carterton after tho New Year holiday’s. The Director General of the Post Office, Wellington, replying to tho council’s letter in regard to the erection of the new Post Office in Carterton, said that the building would bo sei back approximately 4ft. 6in. from the building line in Holloway Street, and that the corner entrance would be splayed to provide an entrance about 7ft. wide.
The Wairarapa South County Council wrote stating that it had decided to allow the borough to insert a concrete sump in the water race at Mr Carter’s property in order to allow a valve to be operated. It was decided to carry out the work as soon as possible.
It was decided that the hosing restrictions be enforced and that those breaking the law be prosecuted. It was resolved that High Street, from Holloway Street to Belvedere Street, be closed to all vehicular traffic on Christmas and New Year eves, and that traffic control corps be asked to take charge from 7 p.m. to 10 o’clock each night. On the motion of Councillor Wolters, seconded by Councillor DeLacey, residents are to be warned that they must not deposit rubbish from their properties on to the streets; that hedge cuttings must not be burned on streets; and that no fires be lit in the borough without permission having been obtained from the Town Clerk. At the conclusion of business the Mayor extended season’s greetings to Councillors and the office and outside staffs, which were suitably acknow-, ledged.
