BY EIGHTH AND FIFTH ARMIES CONTINUED FIERCE FIGHTING WIDELY EXTENDED AIR ATTACKS. TARGETS IN ITALY & BALKANS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.30 a.m.) RUGBY, December 21. “Fierce fighting continued throughout yesterday on the Eighth Army front,” states an Italy communique. A further advance was made in the centre, and positions in the Ortona area were improved. The Fifth Army continued to advance in some portions of the mountainous country on the right of the front. At one point they advanced 1| miles, while elsewhere an important hill was occupied. Patrols were active in the coastal sector. “The railway yards at Sofia and the airfield of Eleusis (near Athens) were attacked yesterday by heavy bombers, escorted by long-range fighters, and an excellent coverage was reported in both cases. “Fighter-bombers flew in offensive sweeps to the Rome drea, destroying rolling stock and motor transport; Our fighters attacked ground positions and transport. Twenty-eight enemy aircraft were destroyed, while eleven Allied planes are missing.”
