AIR MAIL SERVICE
ACROSS THE ATLANTIC
OTTAWA. December 4
The Royal Canadian Air Force is to open shortly a Trans-Atlantic air mail service for fighting forces overseas. The service will cover 9,000 miles. It will be based in Ottawa where big bombers will take off. It will span the Atlantic to Britain and from Britain will relay mail as far as Cairo, Naples or anywhere else in the nearest theatre of war where Canadian soldiers, sailors and airmen are fighting. The service is being established because of the length of time taken for ordinary mail to reach men on the active fronts. Fifteen crews of pilots, copilots; wireless air gunners and navigators have been training for the job tor a month. In preparation they have been flying non-stop from Ottawa to Edmonton, a distance of 1,950- miles, several times weekly. Their orders on these flights were to keep at such a height that the use of oxygen would be necessary at all times.
