FAULTY HANDLING
OF AMERICAN LANDING • CRAFT CAUSE OF HEAVY LOSSES AT TARAWA. ACCORDING TO DESIGNED. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) WASHINGTON, December 15. Faulty handling of the Higgins landing craft and not the craft itself was responsible for the heavy marine casualties at Tarawa, in the Gilberts--1026 killed and 2557 wounded. This was claimed today by the designer and builder of the craft, Mr Andrew J. Higgins. He was replying to statements that the landing craft would not cross the great reef encircling Tarawa, forcing the invaders to transfer to small boats under terrific Japanese fire.
Mr Higgins said his craft were designed to be hurled ashore at full speed over reefs. He offered to train landing crews at New Orleans, where the craft had been successfully tested, hurdling tree stumps and other obstructions.
