FEATHERSTON
RIVER BOARD FLOOD PROTECTION AND LAND’ RECLAMATION. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the South Wairarapa River Board was held in the Council Chambers on Saturday, there being present: Messrs R. A. Donald (chairman), R. W. Matthews, A. Linton, T. Hume, T. A. Herrick and W. H. Martin. A credit balance of £370 9s 4d was reported. A lo’ng discussion took place on work required to be carried out at the Turanganui River, but after the engineer had explained matters it was decided that the project was. beyond the finances of the board. The following resolution was passed: “That a deputation comprising Messrs R. A. Donald, A. Linton and H. F. Toogood wait on the Minister of Agriculture to discuss the proposed Lower Valley flood protection and land reclamation scheme as outlined by the board’s engineer.”

ERECTION OF GOVERNMENT HOUSES.
At the monthly meeting of the Featherston Borough Council a letter was received from the Featherston Service Club asking the council to reconsider its previous decision concerning payment toward the costs of repair to the piano on loan tj> the club. It was agreed to pay half the cost but it was to be understood that in future before any expenditure of a like nature was incurred the council’s opinion be obtained. ®
Councillor Hardie reported that a good job was being made of the fence between the Domain and occupiers of adjacent sections. Councillor Boston reported that the cause of the short water supply in the mains had been located and remedied, making almost a 751 b. pressure in the mains throughout the town, which was welcome news to the council. It was decided to write to the Hon. B. Roberts, asking that he push the claim for a further ten Government houses to be erected in Featherston. It was resolved that a carpenter be called in to do certain repairs required at the Town Hall.
It was decided that the 10 per cent penalty be added to all outstanding .rates after February 14. It was decided that the office be closed between Christmas Eve and January 4, 1944. The Clerk was granted annual holidays from January 10, 1944, to enable him to attend the New Zealand bowling championships. The Mayor thanked the councillors for their co-operation during the year and wished them and the staff a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. The Mayor’s remarks were heartily reciprocated. Euchre Party There was a large attendance at the euchre party held in the Services’ Club last night, the winners being Mr Cross and Mrs I..O’Neale. A competition was won by Cpl. R. Bromley and Pte. King. Personal Items Mr J. W. Holland, postmaster, has resumed duties after his annual leave. A/c2 G. Fellingham, of Nelson, is visiting his parents, Mr and Mrs J. W. Fellingham. COSY THEATRE “THE VOICE OF TERROR.” Tonight there will be shown the sensational drama, “Sherlock Holmes; and the Voice of Terror,” featuring Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Evelyn Ankers and Reginald Denny.
