TOUGH FIGHTING
ALONG EIGHTH ARMY FRONT IN ITALY Repeated German Counter-Attacks Repelled LIMITED ALLIED GAINS IN SOME AREAS CANADIANS ON OUTSKIRTS OF ORTONA LONDON, December 11. Tough fighting- is reported all along- the Eighth Army's front, where attacks and counterattacks have raged across hills and valleys. In one ravine the Germans launched five attacks in just over 24 hours. At the end, Canadian troops still held all the positions they had won earlier, just outside Ortona. They also closed in on the road inland from Ortona. The Germans threw in tanks in an effort to keep their positions on the road, but when three out of a formation of four Mark IV tanks were knocked out, the rest fell back out of range. Indian troops advancing on the Moro River line made a limited advance. They got among the Germans and took 50 prisoners. On the Fifth Army’s front, mortars and artillery are keeping- up an exchange of fire. The fighting- has died down and the Allies are consolidating their recent gains. Allied fighter-bombers yesterday attacked German positions in front of the Fifth Army and medium bombers raided two ports in Yugoslavia.
