CARTERTON
OBITUARY MR CHARLES EDWARD JONES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The death occurred at Richmond, Nelson, on Saturday of Mr Charles Edward Jones, at the age of 65 years. The late Mr Jones was well known in Carterton, where he resided for many years before going to Masterton, and later to Richmond. Born at Matarawa he lived most of his life in that district, being engaged in farming pursuits. He received his education .at the Matarawa School. After leaving Matarawa he built the home now owned by Mr Geo. Brown, secretary-man-ager of the Wairarapa Power Board, and lived in Carterton for many years. He was a former member of the Carterton Borough Council and chairman of the gas committee. When residing at Matarawa he was chairman of the school committee for several years and was later chairman of the Carterton School Committee. For years he was a circuit steward of the CartertonDalefield Methodist Church and was its secretary over a long period of years. He is survived by a widow and one daughter. He also leaves three brothers (Messrs James Emery, Carterton: Fred. Australia, and Frank Jones, Matarawa), and four sisters (Mrs G. Blanc. Masterton, and Misses Edith Elizabeth. Lillian Mary, Matarawa, and Adela Mabel, Wood Street, Greytown). The sympathy of a wide circle of friends is extended to the relatives. The funeral will take place at Nelson.
BOWLING CARTERTON CLUB CONTESTS. A number of enjoyable games were played on a fairly fast green at Caiterton on Saturday. The visitors included members from the Park Club, ’Masterton. The afternoon tea arrangements were supervised by Mesdames S. McCarty and Ross Gallon, who were accorded a vote of thanks. The games resulted as follows: W. H. Smith. E. H. Nunn (s), 25/20, McPherson, Hawker, Johnston (s) beat McPherson, Drummond, Edwards (s), 21/16. Champion singles: Daysh beat Foss. '3O/18. Colts’ singles: Vaughan beat McPherson, 27/18. Progressive pairs: Pankhurst and King (s) beat Catt and Barber (s), 27/20. Beautiful Specimen of Trout. A beautiful specimen of a trout was caught on Saturday in the Ruamahunga River, Lower Valley, by Mr Jansen, of Martinborough. The fish turned the scale without head of tail at over 51bs. It was one of several of a similar size. Band Concert. Members of the Carterton Municipal Silver Band under their conductor, Mr W. Spooner, played an excellent pro'gramme at the band rotunda, in Cai - rington Park yesterday afternoon. The Vnusic was much appreciated. On ’Christmas Eve a programme o Christmas music will be played in High Street by the band. Amateur Swimming Club The annual meeting of the Carterton Amateur Swimming Club will be held in the Borough Council Chambers tonight at 8 o'clock.
Salvation Army Concert On Wednesday evening the children from Whatman Home, Masterton, will provide one of their enjoyable concert programmes in the State Theatre. Among the items will be a gymnastic display by 50 to 60 children.
