PICNIC TRAGEDY
THIRTEEN BOYS DROWNED IN NEW SOUTH WALES, PUNT OVERTURNED DURING SUDDEN STORM. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, December 12. Thirteen boys, all aged between eight and 10 years, were drowned when a punt overturned during a sud’den storm on the Clarence River about 400 miles north of Sydney on Saturday afternoon. Eighteen other boys were rescued. The lads, who all came from Grafton, were attending a wolf cubs’ picnic. The large punt capsized only 200 yards from shore in a channel 60ft. deep. Rowing boats were rushed out in an attempt to rescue the boys. Eyewitnesses said most of the boys were drowned because they held on to one another in the water. Distracted mothers" had to be prevented from running into the river in their anxiety to look for their missing children. Ten of the 13 boys drowned came from one suburb and four from the same street.
