GIANT CARGO PLANE
RECORD MAIDEN TRIP MADE BY MARS.
17 TON LOAD CARRIED ON ONE 'STAGE.
(By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) WASHINGTON, December 11.
The flying-boat Mars, the largest aircraft in the world, completed the first war mission to Brazil, Trinidad and Bermuda, shattering al existing records for cargo transportation and over-water flight. This was announced by» Colonel Knox, who added that the navy was discussing the construction of more such aircraft with the Glenn Martin Company. The war had demonstrated the need for huge cargo planes, and the navy’s experiments undoubtedly would immensely benefit post-war operations.
The outstanding feature of the Mars’ maiden mission was a 4375-mile nonstop flight from Maryland to Natal in Brazil, carrying nearly six tons of Christmas mail for the armed forces. The Mars covered the distance in 1705 minutes, averaging 153 miles an hour, which is a world record. The Mars on another stage carried 17 tons of cargo, another record.
The enormous two-deck hull of the plane has the capacity of a 15-roomed house. The Mars is powered with four 2200 horse-power Wright Cyclone engines, and has a wing span of 200 feet.
