Miss C. Hosking, Church Street, Masterton, is staying at Plimmerton. Mrs H. M. A. Major, Pownall Street, Masterton, is visiting Palmerston North. Miss E. Daniell, “Mathon Lodge,” Masterton, who has been staying with her sister, Mrs J. A. Smith, Palmerston’ North, has returned home. Mr C. J. Drake, of Wellington, is spending the weekend in Masterton and will be the speaker at services at the Ruhamah Gospel Hall tomorrow. The Rev. E, Nicholls, of the Colombo Street Baptist Church, Christchurch, is retiring from the ministry owing to illhealth. He has had 33 years’ service. Advice has been received in Masterton that Pilot Officer Ken McMullen has been promoted to the rank of Flying Officer. He is serving overseas. The marriage took place recently at Gisborne of Jean, only daughter of Mr J. H. Marshall and the late Mrs Mar-, shall, of Gisborne, to Roland, only son of Mr and Mrs G. H. Perry, Masterton.

Among a party of N.Z.E.F. personnel (Pacific section) who recently returned to New Zealand were Major G. G. Hancox, formerly of Masterton; LanceCorporal R. L. Ferguson, 9 Cornwall Place, Masterton; Gunner E. J. Howe, 75 Renall Street, Masterton, and Private H. A. Pratt, 85 Church Street, 'Masterton.

The funeral of the late Mrs A. M. Wright took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon. The service at the chapel and that at the graveside were conducted by the Rev D. W. Storkey. Wreaths were received from the teachers and children of the Salvation Army Sunday School and the patients of Ward Six, Masterton Hospital, besides others from private sympathisers. The pall-bearers were Messrs G. Hunter, C. E. Grey, J. Griffiths and J. Downey. At the Dominion conference of the Workers’ Educational Association in Wellington, the following Dominion officers were elected: —President, Mr G. Manning (Canterbury); vice-presi-dent, Professor R. W. Souter (Otago); hon. secretary-treasurer, Mr A. T. Macalpin (Wellington). Mr Manning represents the W.E.A. on the National Council of Adult Education. In addition to the officers, the W.E.A. Dominion Council includes one representative of each district council. To celebrate the coming of age of their daughter ’Mavis, Mr and Mrs W. Barrett (formerly of Masterton) entertained a large gathering of friends at their home in Julia Street, Pahiatua. Dancing and games were enjoyed. Prior to the cutting of the cake, Mr P. R. Boagey proposed the toast of the guest of honour and she was accorded musical honours. Mr A. A. Vaughan (formerly of Masterton), on behalf of all present, thanked Mr and Mrs Barrett for their hospitality.
