EXTENDED POWERS

SOUGHT FOR THE FEDERAL PARLIAMENT TO DEAL WITH POST-WAR AFFAIRS REFERENDUM PROPOSED BY CABINET (By Telegraph—(Press Association—Copyright) CANBERRA, December 8. Extended constitutional powers for the Australian Federal Parliament for five years after the war will be sought by a referendum. This has been recommended by the full Cabinet. The powers being sought would give to the Commonwealth authority te deal with the following matters: —Repatriation, employment 1 , marketing, uniform, company legislation, trusts, combines and monopolies, and profiteering. Control of secondary production, air transport and unification of railway gauges will also be sought. The Cabinet generally took the view that while these powers should remain permanently with the Commonwealth there was greater political chance of getting them if a definite limit was placed on their duration. Some years ago, the State premiers agreed to make a voluntary transfer of these powers to the Federal Government, but some of the State Parliaments refused to pass the necessary validating legislation.
