NUMBER OF U-BOATS
SUNK DURING NOVEMBER EXCEEDS THAT OF THEIR VICTIMS. ALLIED OFFICIAL STATEMENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) LONDON. December 9. Anti-U-boat operations in November are notable for the little the enemy has achieved for the great effort he has exerted, says a joint statement issued by President Roosevelt and Mr Churchill. The number of merchantmen sunk by Üboats in November was less than any other month since May, 1940. “We, by means of aircraft operating from the Azores, have been able to improve the protection of our convoys and to diminish the area in which the U-boats are free from attack by our forces,” the statement adds. “The enemy has used long-range aircraft to assist in concentrating U-boats against our convoy route. Despite this, our escort and counter-attacks have been effective. “The caution of the U-boats has lessened the number of opportunities given to our forces to strike against them. Nevertheless, the number of U-boats sunk in November again exceeded the number of their victims.”
