TOWN OF CHANGTEH

RECAPTURED BY CHINESE JAPANESE SUFFER HEAVY LOSSES. ENEMY BID FOR CHANGSHA FOILED. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, December 9. The Chinese have recaptured the rice bowl city of Changleh, in central China. It has been in Japanese hands for five days. Changteh is important because it covers the way to Changsha, the important rail and road junction to Tungting Lake. Changteh was taken by the Japanese after a long and gallant defence by the Chinese garrison. Having taken the town, the Japanese were in their turn encircled and the town was recovered by the Chinese, the enemy suffering very heavy losses. A spokesman in Chungking said that with the recapture of Changteh the Japanese bid for Changsha appeared to have been foiled.
