ALLEGED THREAT
BOROUGH COUNCIL EMPLOYEE
CASE BEFORE APPEAL COMMITTEE DIRECTION TO SHEARING An allegation that a threat was overhanging E. Paku, a Masterton Borough employee, that he would lose his job if he went shearing was made by the District Manpower Officer, Mr T. H. Crosbie, at a sitting of the Industrial Manpower Appeal Committee in Masterton on Tuesday, when Mr Crosbie said the Borough Council wished to withdraw an appeal against his decision directing Paku to employment with K. Paku as a shearer. Mr Crosbie said Mrs Paku was present and he wanted her to receive an assurance from the board that Paku would have to be reinstated. Members of the committee stated that the borough could not decline to reinstate Paku, as that would be contrary to the regulations. In reply to a question as to who made the alleged statement, Mr Crosbie said it was the Borough Engineer.
ENGINEER’S STATEMENT
DISAGREEMENT OVER POLICY The Borough Engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson, to whom the above matter was referred, stated that as far as the Mayor and Councillors were concerned the question had never been considered by them and therefore no reflection could be cast on them. In so far as Paku or his wife were concerned, Mr Mabson said he had made no statement to them that Paku would not be reinstated. In a disagreement with the policy of the Wairarapa Primary Production Council in taking key men for farm work when men qualified for the work in view were available from another source, Mr Mabson said he stated that if key men were to be taken away just when they were most needed they were no use to him. Paku, a tractor driver and tar-sprayer operator, was considered a key man and the Manpower authorities were unable to replace him. As far as the national interests were concerned, Mr Mabson said he had always endeavoured to assist in every way possible and was still prepared to do so.
