GREYTOWN

LABOUR PARTY EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The ladies’ social committee of the : *Greytown branch of the Labour Party held a very successful euchre party t j and dance on Monday night, there be- , ing a large attendance. The prize-winners at euchre were: — - Ladies: Miss Panapa, 1; Mrs Rowlands, 2. Men: Mr Hood, 1; Mr McKenna, 3. ' The consolation prizes were won by Mrs Hume and Mr McHardy. The music for the dancing was supplied by Mr S. Te Tau. An Interesting point. Speaking at the calf competition at Greytown, Mr Hesse, agriculture instructor to the Wellington Education Board, stated that official figures showed that the number of cattle in New Zealand was considerably less-than last year—6o,ooo. In spite of this the entries for the school competitions had increased by over 1,000. Mr Brockett made an interesting point. He stated that some farmers were under the impression that the cost of rearing a calf was ,30s more than it would realise if sold. “This 305,” Mr Brockett said, "was money well spent from an educational point of view, and, further, in the majority of cases, the calf would or should remain in the herd.” Cherry Crops. The cherry crops around Greyjown have been very poor this year, in fact, one big orchard which usually has a large army of pickers for several weeks only operated for two days this season. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs M. Hodder have returned home after a holiday spent in the South Island. Mrs A. G. Nisbet has returned to Greytown from Dunedin. TOWN HALL DOUBLE FEATURE BILL. There will be a double feature bill presented at the Town Hall tonight. “Singing Hill” is a brilliant musical drama, featuring Gene Autry and Smiley Burnette, while “Rings on her. Fingers” is an excellent comedy starring Gene Tierney and Henry Fonda. |
