SHORTAGE OF HOUSES
FEDERAL AND STATE ACTION. PROMISED IN AUSTRALIA. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day. 11.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Australian Federal and State governments are to take immediate action to relieve the acute shortage of houses. The Deputy-Prime Minister, Mr Forde, announced that the Commonwealth Government would begin a three months’ building programme for the construction of about 1,200 homes. This scheme is not connected with the Commonwealth’s plan to give financial aid in the construction of 30.000 homes in the first year after the war. The New South Wales Government will build immediately 200 workers’ homes on 35 acres of land secured for the purpose, about 20 miles from Sydney. _
