LABOUR PARTY

♦ MASTERTON WOMEN’S BRANCH ENJOYABLE SOCIAL GATHERING There was a large attendance of members and friends at a social gathering held by the Masterton women's branch of the Labour Party in the Y.M.C.A. yesterday, Mrs Copp presiding. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Loader and McKenzie. The meeting opened with the singing of “God Defend New Zealand.” The card committee reported that £6 Is, an amount from an afternoon card party, had been forwarded to the Makogai Leper Fund. Eleven parcels were packed during November and sent with a cheery Christmas message to the sons of members serving overseas. Mesdames Bannister and Perfect, the hospital visitors, were asked to see that each child in the hospital received a gift for Christmas. Mrs J. Robertson reported on the activities of the local sub-centre of the Red Cross Society. Mesdames McCord, Edwards and Smith were appointed to assist on Friday with the Merchant Navy appeal. Songs, which were greatly enjoyed, were contributed by Mrs McMinn (“I Look Into Your Garden” and “Little Old Gardens,” Mrs Watson playing the accompaniment) and Mrs Edwards (“Your Gonna Awa’ Jimmy”), both of whom have splendid voices. A clever sketch entitled “The Kids’ Quiz Session” caused much amusement. Those taking part were: Housewife, Mrs Read; two listeners-in, Mesdames Snowsill and Edwards; Quiz Kids, Mesdames Askew, Brown, McCord and Skews; Professor Knowall, Mrs Copp. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Blake, Bannister, Bagley, Askew and McWhinnie. Seasonal greetings were exchanged and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought a very enjoyable gathering to a close.
