Mr and Mrs S. R. Gawith, UpperPlain, are spending a few days in Nelson.

Mrs J. M. Coradine, Perry Street, Masterton, has returned home from a visit to Auckland.

Mrs R. Barton, Pownall Street, Mas-ter-ton, who had been staying at Castlepoint, has returned to Masterton.' Misses Joyce Lyttle and Jose Cross, of Bannister Street, Masterton, are spending a holiday at the Marlborough Sounds.

Wing Commander Alan Joseph Shelfoon, R.C.A.F., has been appointed chief flying instructor of the Empire Central Flying School in Canada, states an Air Ministry news service message. •

Having received permission from Cabinet to retire after 50 years’ service in the teaching profession, Mr I. E. Newton, principal of Wanganui Technical College for 21 years, has tendered his resignation to the board of managers. An old boy of Christchurch Boys’ High School and a graduate of Canterbury College, Mr Newton entered the teaching profession in 1893 under the Canterbury Education Board at St. Albans School.

The death occurred at a private hospital in Wellington this week of a former well known Masterton resident in Mrs G. Johnson. Mrs Johnson formerly resided in Devon Street. Masterton, leaving in recent years to live in Khandallah. Her husband is a sergeant in the Air Force and there are four daughters, Misses Sylvia, Pearl, Joy and Fay Johnson. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to the family in their bereavement.
