MASTERTON W.W.S.A.

CONTEST FOR WHITTAKER CUP. FAREWELL GATHERING HELD IN EVENING. Members of the Masterton unit of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary competed on Saturday for the Whittaker Cup. The contest took place in the Masterton Central school ground, in the presence of members of the committee and others. The Signalling Platoon won the trophy with a margin of three points over Transport Those in charge of the competing platoons were: —Signalling, Miss Tooby; transport, Miss Tauwhare; canteen, Miss W. Nini. The judges were Captain Hogg and Lieut. Abbot. An apology for absence was received from the Dominion secretary, Miss Malempre. The Central School drummer boys were in attendance, and were thanked for their assistance.

In the evening, at a concert and dance held in the Savage Club rooms, Mrs A. Whittaker, 0.C., was farewelled and a presentation made to her in appreciation of her services. Mrs J. Robertson, president of the W.W.S.A. committee, referred to Mrs Whittaker’s excellent work in Masterton in charge of the W.W.S.A., and in organising a book drive for the soldiers and a street sales campaign for the Liberty Loan. Mrs Whittaker, in reply, said she had had to train the girls in the street, and this she had accomplished without accident. She was sorry to be leaving Masterton. She wished the girls every success, and said the Transport section had already put in a challenge for the shield, to be decided in March. The Canteen Platoon was also challenging. Mrs Whittaker said she had also collected for the soldiers’ parcel fund by means of a wheelbarrow.
