WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MATARAWA-DALEFIELD MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Mata rawa-Dalefield Women's Institute, held in the Dalefield Hall, a good attendance of members was presided over by Mrs Hughes. Mrs Rogers read the report of the half-yearly council meeting, held in Carterton recently, for which she was accorded a vote of thanks. Mesdames Rofe and Knowles sang several much appreciated solos. The competitions for the month resulted as follows:—Seniors: Christmas novelty, Mrs F. Groube 1, Mesdames Ross Gallon and S. Mearty, equal, 2, Mesdames W. Ticehurst and L. Rogers, equal, 3. Knitting, Airforce mittens; Mrs E. Smith 1, Mrs L. Rogers 2, Mrs G. Sadler 3. Flowers, best rose: Mrs W, Ticehurst 1, Mrs L. Rogers 2, Mrs Ross Gallon 3. Juniors.—Christmas novelty: Miss B. Sadler 1, Miss J. Conwell 2, Miss N. Conwell 3. Knitting. Airforce mittens: Miss J. Conwell 1, Miss B. Sadler 2, Miss G. Conwell 3. Flowers, best rose: Miss G. Conwell 1, Miss N. Conwell 2, Miss A. Hodder 3. Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames B. and V. McPhee and I. McLaren. BOWLING CLUB COMPETITIONS. Further games in the Carterton Bowling Club’s competitions have resulted as follows: — Champion singles: Johnson beat Adams, 23/18; Newbould beat Whyte. 28/15. Colts’ singles: Vaughan beat Dew. 23/22; T. L. Harp beat W. H. Smith. 22/16; E. H. Smith beat McPherson. 20/13. Gift Parcels for Soldiers. Three hundred and forty-one parcels (the Carterton district quota) are required for soldiers overseas. These parcels will not be addressed, but persons desiring to subscribe to the same and have their names enclosed, should leave their donations at the Borough Council chambers. Personal Items. The Hon. Ben Roberts, member for Wairarapa, will be entertained at a complimentary gathering and dance in the State Theatre, Carterton, on Monday night, to mark his elevation to Cabinet rank. W.W.S.A. Dance. In the State Theatre tonight the W.W.S.A. will hold a dance, the proceeds from which will be added to the Garden Fund, for the purpose of providing seed, manure and equipment. The girls have already planted seeds in a section in Wakelin Street, and are enthusiastic in connection with their garden work. Rail-Car Hits Cow, The 8.30 o’clock rail-car from Wellington to Masterton last night ran info a cow south of the Carterton railway station. The oil pipes feeding the engine, were damaged, with the result that the car was unable to proceed on its journey. It was taken to Masterton by steam train this morning. None of the passengers were injured. They continued their journey’ by a rail-car later in the evening. Seaman Callister Honoured, The Belvedere schoolroom was filled last night when Seaman Colin Callister, son of Mr and Mrs A. H. Callister, of Brooklyn Road, Carterton, was entertained. Mrs Rogers provided excellent dance music and extras were played by Misses B. James and I. Thomas and Mr A. Morris. Mr J. Parker contributed two much appreciated vocal items. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs C. Bell. Mr A. ,E. Reid presented Seaman Callister with a wristlet watch on behalf of the settlers of Belvedere and the ‘surrounding districts. He also handed him a parcel of woollies from the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Supper was provided.
