Miss J. Cooper, Renall Street. Masterton, has returned from a visit to Paraparaumu Beach. . Mrs P. J. Borthwick, “Eridge,” Lansdowne, who has been visiting Wellington, has returned to Masterton. Mrs Cook, who has been staying with her mother, Mrs Walter Cameron, Te Ore Ore, has returned to Patea. Mrs J. Collie (Masterton) accompanied by her daughter, Mrs Brown and Miss Douglas, has left on a visit to Christchurch and Riverton.
Mr S. G. Holland, Leader of the Opposition, arrived in Wellington yesterday after his month’s visit to Australia. He left last night for Christchurch.
The death is reported in a Press Association telegram from Christchurch of Mr Henry Cotterill, barrister and solicitor, of the firm of Duncan, Cotterill and Co. Mr Cotterill was born in Lyttelton in 1855. He was for many years a member of the board of Christ’s College. As a young man he played cricket and Rugby football for Canterbury.
The death occurred at Invercargill yesterday of Mr John Thomson, aged 65, managing director of the drapery firm of Thomson and Beattie Ltd. Mr Thomson was born at Invercargill. He took a keen interest in bowling and -as a member of the Invercargill club he Avon the centre singles championship in 1929.
The Hon. W.’ E. Barnard, Speaker of the House of Representatives and till recently M.P. for Napier, has decided to make his home in Tauranga, where he intends to practise law after the Christmas vacation. Mr Barnard’s term of office as Speaker will end when Parliament meets and the House elects his successor.
Mr W. P. Endean, the former’ National member of Parliament for Remuera, was presented with a gold cigarette case from constituents of the electorate at a gathering in Auckland yesterday to welcome back the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Holland. The presentation was made by Mr Holland, who referred to the loyalty and co-op-eration always given him by Mr Endean. Mrs Endean was presented with two chairs.
Mr George Herbert Harper, who died on Tuesday in Wellington, was the eldest son of the late Sir George and Lady Agnes Harper, of Christchurch, and a grandson of the late Bishop Harper, the first Bishop of Canterbury. He was born in Christchurch in 1872 and was educated at Christs College and St. Patrick’s College, Wellington. He practised law at . Otaki from 1899 to 1924, when he retired to take up farming.
The death occurred yesterday of Mr H. Snowden Fairchild, accountant and secretary of the Wellington Fire Board. He was a son of the late Captain John Fairchild, the New England shipmaster, who for years was captain of the Government steamers Stella, Hinemoa, and lastly, the Tutanekai, on the -deck of which, when alongside a Wellington wharf, he was killed. The late Mr Fairchild, who is survived by his widow, was born in Wellington and educated at Wellington College. Mr H. J. Faiichild of Masterton is a brother and Miss Edith Fairchild, of Masterton and formerly of England, a sister.
