CALVES AND LAMBS

CHILDREN’S REARING COMPETITIONS ANNUAL JUDGING ALFREDTON SCHOOL RESULTS (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr J. 'L. Heckler, Ihuraua, was the judge at the Alfredton School Calf Club's exhibit of calves and lambs, which took place at the Alfredton school. Prior to the commencing of the judging Mr Heckler addressed the children and explained the various points to look for and the manner in which the judging was done. The competitions and winners are as under:— Calves Champion calf, Mick Smith 1, John Payne 2, Mavis Cooper 3. Best leading calf, John Payne 1, Edna Cooper and Kelvin Hartley, equal 2. Best conditioned calf, John Payne 1, Mick Smith 2, Edna Cooper 3. Unofficial competition (for calves not eligible for the official competition), Lynda Burch 1, Barrie Rolls 2, Margaret Payne 3. Calf judging by children: Boys, Kelvin Hartley and John Payne, equal 1, H. Rolls and Richard Rolls, equal 2. Girls, Jackie Clee 1, Edna Cooper 2, Gwen Henderson, V. Watts and N. Eagle, equal 3. Lambs Champion lamb, Betty Houlbrooke. Best wool lambs, K. Henderson 1, T. Seymour 2, I. Henderson 3. Best pet, Hylton Dickens. Lamb leading race, Betty Houlbrooke 1, 1. Henderson 2, B. Rolls 3. The following children also showed lambs and were awarded prizes: B. Seymour, I. Walker, L. Retter, R. Cooper, M. Smith, R. Edmonds, L. Burch, V.’ Edmonds, J. Clee, G Henderson, N. McKay, N. Henderson, W. Payne, B. Rolls, A. McKay and B. Burch. The total number of entries for the judging was 12 calves and 21 lambs. The judge in commenting on the competitions' said that he had not heard of such a large entry at any other school and was pleased to see such a number of parents and filends present. He congratulated the children on their efforts, and said that he was sure that both the parents and children had spent a most enjoyable and I interesting, as well as instructive, day.
