j PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ; INDUCTION OF REV A. C. LANE (“Times-Age” Special.) The induction of the Rev A. C. Lane as minister in charge of the Greytown Presbyterian Church was held last night. The Provincial Moderator, the Rev Madill, presided and the sermon was preached by the Rev D. W. Storkey of Masterton. The Moderator for the Wairarapa, Rev Madill, spoke of the good work Mr Lane had done in the outstation districts of the Wairarapa, and expressed the hope that he would soon be fully restored to health. After the service a social gathering was held in the Sunday school room. The following contributed items: Pianoforte solo, Mrs Brooking; songs, Miss Askew, Mrs T. R. Ingley and Mr Storkey. Mesdames Bower and Anker extended a welcome on behalf of the church helpers. The Revs H. Bloomfield, D. W. Storkey and H. White also extended a welcome to Mr Lane. Mrs S. C. Shedden, on behalf of the local R.S.A., welcomed Mr Lane as an old “digger.” In his reply Mr Lane expressed his sincere thanks for the warm welcome. He said he looked forward with hope and pleasure to his work in the Greytown and the Morison’s Bush district. On behalf of the Ladies’ Guild, Mrs Alex Johnson made a presentation to Miss E. Gregor and Mr R. Anker, who have both carried opt the duties of organist for many years. Supper was served by the ladies’ committee. MEMORIAL SERVICE THE LATE MR J. WALLIS A large congregation attended the memorial service to the late Mr J. Wallis at the Presbyterian Church. Grey town. The preacher’ was the Rev H. Bloomfield. The Greytown Fire Brigade, the Odd Fellows’ Lodge, together with representatives of many local institutions and clubs, were present at the service. Mr Bloomfield, in a striking address referred to the sincere and deep sense of duty the late Mr Wallis always felt towards his church. He was an elder
holding a most important church office, and throughout his life was a keen church worker of high Christian ideals. His long public service, despite ill health in recent years, had been outstanding in the community. No effort in the interests of the public, club or institution ever failed . to enlist his keen and enthusiastic support. In the sphere of games and sport he gave unfailing support. The keynote of the deceased's life, the ifreacher concluded, had been “service.” Miss I. Askew sang a sacred solo and the favourite hymns-of Mr Wallis were included. The organist was Miss E. Gregor. TOWN HALL -SECRET AGENT OF JAPAN.” There will be a double feature programme presented at the Town Hall tonight. “Secret Agent of Japan” tells a thrilling story with Preston Foster and Lynn Bari in the principal roles. “Give Out Sisters” is a brilliant musical comedy with the Andrews Sisters in the principal roles.
