ST. ANDREW’S DAY

CELEBRATED IN MASTERTON ENJOYABLE CONCERT & DANCE GATHERING IN MASONIC HALL LAST NIGHT A large and appreciative audience thoroughly enjoyed a concert presented by the Saint Andrew Society at the Masonic Hall last night in celebration of Saint Andrew’s Day. Local artists contributed a wide variety of items. The stage was decorated with flowers which made a bright and colourful setting for the performers. During the evening the Chief (Mr H. Mackenzie Douglas) presented Miss D. Jamieson with a shoulder spray as a token of the society’s appreciation of her efforts in arranging the concert programme and also the musical items for the gatherings during the season. He also presented a spray to Mrs H. M. Morton in recognition of her past services to the society. He expressed the thanks of the society to all who had been kind enough to entertain at the gatherings, and also at that concert, and to the willing helpers who had made the season so successful.

The following was the programme last night: Mr W. Linton, bagpipe selections (“John McDonald of “Glencoe,” “Skye Boat Song” and “Laddie in Green,” “Road to the Isles” and Balmoral Castle. A quartet party from the League of Mothers’ Choy - , under the baton of Mrs Miller Hope, accompanied by Mrs W. Watson, sang “England, Dear England,” "Old Folks Medley,” “An Olden Tune” and “Jock O’Hazeldean.” Monologues and elocutionary items were contributed by Mrs Noel Leadley, “In as Much,” “The Sufferer,” “The Vicar’s Presentation” and “Opening the Sardines.” Misses Heather and Joan Douglas, vocal duets. “Christina’s Lament” and “White Christmas.” Mr Harry Hall, Scottish songs in character, “Early in the Morning,” “Jericho,” “Breakfast in Bed,” and “I Forgot the Number of my House,” “Ten Little Bridesmaids,” “My Meatless Day." Mrs Alan Barns and Miss Shona Won-all, pianoforte duets, “Blue Danube” and “Nanette.” Miss Doreen Jamieson, songs, “Hame o’ Mine” and “The Rose of Allendale.” Miss Edna Corlett, sailor’s hornpipe. Mrs Alan Barns was a most efficient accompaniste for the vocal items.

At the conclusion of the programme a spper, including a haggis donated by Mrs Bell, was enjoyed and Scottish and old time dancing followed. The following were the winners of the novelty dances: Circassian Circle, Miss Joan Douglas and Mr Don Carruthers; Monte Carlo waltz, Mrs J. O. Thomson and Mi’ C. Spencer; lucky spot Maxina, Mrs Bartosh and Mr Jas. Henderson. Chief’s Piper T. Pickett supplied the music for the Highland dancing.
