Street Tree Doctored. The damage caused by vandals to a lime tree, one of an avenue in Worksop Road, Masterton, was referred to Mr M. Davey, Government Orchard Instructor, Department of Agriculture. ' Mr Davey states that fortunately the depth of the cutting has not been beneath the cortex, and that the cambium ' layers are uninjured. The cut surface . has now been covered with grafting ' wax to avoid excessive transpiration and fungoid infection. Art Club Evening. An enjoyable time is promised tonight in the Savage Club rooms, when the Masterton Art Club will hold a criticism and social evening. Mr S. B. Maclennan, A.R.C.A., who will make a criticism of club work, will also give a short talk on art. A feature of the evening will be the presentation of a one-act play ,by members of the Masterton Little Theatre Society, entitled “In a Glass Darkly,” the theme of which is appropriate to the occasion. Vocal and musical items will also be contributed and supper served. An invitation is extended to Little Theatre Society members to be present. i The Burton Case. I The Wellington Methodist Synod has carried by a small majority a motion | expressing the view that the circumstances surrounding the dismissal of the Rev. O. E. Burton from the ministry by the New Zealand Methodist Conference in 1942 were not valid according to Church law, and out of harmony with the historic position of the Church, and requesting the conference to reopen his case with a view to affording him an opportunity to remain in the Methodist ministry. Mr Burton, who is an advocate of pacifism, was for seven years minister of the Webb Street Church, Wellington. He is now serving a term of imprisonment imposed for subversion. Tennis Balls. Already 380 dozen tennis balls had been distributed throughout New Zealand, slated Mr S. A. deal, president of the Auckland I,awn Tennis Association, on Saturday. He said the production of balls was now increasing and as they were made they were being consigned, through the retailers, to the different centres. It was expected that each week from now approximately 150 dozen, balls would be available for distribution. It would be some time before the total of 5000 dozen tennis balls authorised could be distributed throughout the clubs in New Zeaalnd. In addition, 2000 dozen balls had been authorised for the Services, including . members of overseas forces. Crop Estimates. Statistics of the estimated areas . which have been sown or planted, or ’ are intended to be sown or planted, in ' wheat, oats, barley and potatoes during the 1913-44 season indicate that there . Will be a substantial decline in the Do- > minion’s wheat production, says theGovernment Statistician in his review for tlie period ended October 30.
