I Visit to Hospital. • The Trentham Military Band played at the Masterton Hospital this morning prior to returning to camp. The Man-aging-Secretary (Mr Norman Lee) and the sub-matron (Miss Brown) thanked the band for its kindly action. The Combined Businesses team paraded on the lawn at the hospital yesterday and gave an exhibition for the benefit of the patients.

Old Newspapers Wanted. A further appeal is made to householders by the Masterton Women’s Patriotic Committee to make contributions of newspapers to enable the packing of soldiers’ parcels to proceed. As there is no waste paper depot in Masterton at present, the position is made more difficult, and householders who can leave bundles of newspapers at the Borough Office will be materially assisting the committee in its patriotic work.

Home Service Organisation.

A decision to form a Dominion organisation to be known as the New Zealand Home Service Association was carried enthusiastically at a conference held in Wellington which commenced on Saturday. More than 40 delegates were present representing 37 towns and centres. Mr R. P. Levien presided. Officers elected were: President, Mr R. P. Levient (Wellington); vice-presid-ent, Mr G. Foy (Te Aroha); secretary, Mr J. R. Perston (Wellington).

Fine Display in Park. Speaking at the Wairarapa Interhouse Association’s gala day gathering at the Park on Saturday afternoon special mention was made by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, and by Mr G. H. Mackley, M.P., of the wonderful order in which the custodian (Mr F. H. Knowles) and his staff were maintaining the park. Mr Jordan said Masterton possessed a park of which all were proud. During the day the rose garden was thronged with visitors who freely expressed their pleasure at.the profusion of beautiful blooms.

Wages of Railwaymen. The question of wages and conditions, which has given rise to marked concern among the men for some time, was discussed yesterday by what is described as one of the largest gatherings of railwaymen ever held in Wellington. A resolution was adopted guaranteeing wholehearted support to the executive council of the A.S.R.S. in any action it might deem necessary to advance the claims of the men in the matter. It was made clear that the men are determined to obtain an improvement, and look to the Government to have the position rectified at an early date.

Company Manager Found Guilty.

After a -hearing occupying five days the trial of Stanley Reginald Burns, company director, formerly of Dunedin, on six charges of false pretences and six charges relating to publication of false balance-sheets, concluded in the Dunedin Supreme Court on Saturday. The jury, after a retirement of six hours and a half, found accused guilty on two of the major counts, one in respect of the 1938 balance-sheet and the other in respect of the 1939 balancesheet. He was found not guilty on all the other counts. Accused was remanded in custody till Monday for sentence.

St. Andrew Society Concert. The concert arranged by the Saint Andrew Society for tomorrow night offers a wide and varied entertainment for the enjoyment of the general public ,as well as members of the Society. In addition to vocal, instrumental and elocutionary items, there will be solo dances, pipe solos and items, by Mr Harry Hall. The Society’s Pipe Band will also be in attendance. In response to requests, the Society has increased the seating accommodation ,and there should now be an ample number of seats available. A programme of Scottish and old time dances will follow the concert.
