A KITCHENER STORY
WAS KISSED AND OBEYED ORDER Lord Kitchener, reserved and undemonstrative as he was, was once subject to an osculatory tribute, says a “Manchester Guardian” correspondent. He was sitting as a guest of honour at a luncheon given by the Corporation of Capetown at the end of the South African War, when in the middle of the speeches a little girl of twelve years old entered the room at the far end, boldly marched straight to where Kitchener sat, and kissed him emphatically on the left cheek. The great man betrayed no emotion whatever, either of surprise or alarm, and, moreover, he calmly obeyed the implied command when the child handed to him her autograph album and a pen dipped in ink. Kitchener signed.
