STEMMED & SMASHED
POWERFUL GERMAN TANK ATTACKS
On Southern Flank of Kiev Bulge ONSLAUGHT HALTED AND DRIVEN BACK BY RUSSIAN GUNS CONTINUED SOVIET PROGRESS IN GOMEL AREA LONDON, November 25. The Red Army has stemmed the German counter-offensive on the southern flank of the Kiev bulge and is developing its own offensive north and south of the bulge with continued success. On the White Russian front the Soviet troops have gained more ground in the Gomel area. Tonight’s German communique admits a Russian break through west of the city. The Germans also report bitter fighting inside the Dnieper bend and north of Nikopol. In the great battle of the Kiev bulge, it was reported last night, General Vatutin’s forces stemmed and broke attacks into which the Germans threw great forces of tanks, aircraft and troops. Russian guns met the enemy onslaught with a tremendous concentration of fire, stopped the Germans in their tracks and then drove them back. The Germans suffered heavy losses and did not gain an inch of ground.
