BAD NEWS

GIVEN QUICKLY TO PEOPLE OF REICH TALK OF"HEAVY TERROR ATTACK.” GREAT DAMAGE AND LOSS OF LIFE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, November 23. The German radio, breaking its usual custom, was on the air early this morning giving the German people the news. It described the raid as a heavy terror attack, and stated that great damage and loss of life was caused in many parts of the city, mainly in working class districts. Describing the raid as a terror attack, the German news agency states that it was carried out in spite of dense clouds and complete lack of visibility. Irreplaceable historic and cultural buildings were destroyed and others damaged, including several belonging to diplomatic missions of neutral States.

Most of the foreign embassies are in the Wilhelmstresse area, the very heart of Berlin. German accounts described the efforts of the civilian defence workers to cope with the fires and wreckage. People on the South-east coast of England heard the big force of bombers going over shortly after dark yesterday. The planes took three-quarters of an hour to pass overhead. Not long afterward the enemy’s radio stations from Bremen, on the north-west coast of Germany, to Prague, the Czechoslovak capital, were off the air. Telephone communication between Berlin and Sweden was interrupted. GERMAN CLAIM ROOSEVELT’S SON TAKEN PRISONER. -STORY PROBABLY UNTRUE. WASHINGTON, November 23. The White House and the War Department are without information concerning Berlin reports that a son of President Roosevelt was shot down and taken prisoner during an air raid on Germany. Which of the President’s sons is claimed a prisoner is not stated, but Elliot is the only one in the United States Air Corps. Mrs. Roosevelt said she received word a few days ago from Elliot, who w.as then all right. A War Department spokesman said that the story was probably untrue.
