AIRMAN’S DEATH
SQUADRON LEADER W. A. C. BALL Squadron Leader William A. C. Ball, whose death is officially presumed, was the only son of Mrs W. Herbert, of Paraparaumu Beach, and formerly of Masterton. He was well known in Masterton. After being commissioned in 1940 he was posted to the East and took part in many raids on widely scattered targets including Greece, Libya and Italy. He was transferred to Malta for two months. He then flew from Egypt across Africa find travelled by boat to England. From England he made over 40 raids bn targets in Europe, including Cologne and the Ruhr. He was mentioned in despatches in the 1943 New Year honours list. Just prior to being reported missing on March 9 Squadron Leader Ball was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and was promoted to the rank of Squadron Leader. Squadron Leader Ball’s sister, Mrs J. Clark, of Petone, also formerly’resided in Masterton.
