WOMEN’S CHARTER

An Australian Women’s Charter, of about 5,000 words, was adopted by the Australian Women’s Conference now ended. It demands, among other things, an endowment from the Commonwealth Government to “women home-makers” of at least 30s a week The conference chairman, Mrs Jessie Street, described the recommendation as “epoch making.” The charter demands an improvement in the legal status of women, including amendments to the Married Women’s Property Act to provide for a community of interest in property acquired after marriage by either party other than by inheritance. The full charter embodies all the resolutions passed by the conference. It demands that no discrimination be made in the rights and responsibilities of men and women as citizens, equal pay for work and encouragement for women to take part in all phases of public life. The conference also seeks “wide representation" for women at the international peace conference.
