THROUGH GERMAN DEFENCES IN DNIEPER BEND THREAT TO ENEMY REAR. WELL-TIMED SOVIET BLOWS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, November 22. The Russians in the Dnieper band advanced about 20 miles on a 30mile front after breaking through the German defences east of the Kremenchug - Snamenka Railway, says a Reuter correspondent. One spearhead in the big new drive cressed the railway, ami is now 25 miles north-east of Snamenka. Another force, driving south, is now 28 miles east of Snamenka. This drive, as it develops, threatens the rear of the Germans facing the Russian attack from north-west of Cherkasy. The Russians at the same time are renewing their pressure on the south-east corner of the Dnieper bend, where they have narrowed the Ger-man-held area around Nikopol. They are 30 miles north-west of Nikopol. I “The Times” Moscow correspondent says the Russians’ thrust south of Kremenchug was carefully timed to coincide with the Cherkasy operations, with the object of dividing the German forces on the railway between Smyela and Snamenka. RED ARMY GAINS IN SOUTH AND CENTRE. ENEMY ATTACKS REPULSED NORTH OF JITOMIR. (Received This Day, 1.10 p.m.) LONDON, November 22. Tonight’s Soviet communique says: “The Russians in the Dnieper bend have fought local engagements, as a result of which they have improved their positions, and south of Kremenchug have captured nine strongpoints. “The Red Army at Chernyakhov, ten miles north of Jitomir, and in the Korostychev area have continued to repulse tank and infantry attacks, inflicting heavy losses. “The Red Army on the lower reaches of the Pripet River captured twelve inhabited places and the Pripet railway station and, west of Rechitza, captured sixteen inhabited places. “The Russians north of Gomel captured a number of centres of resistance.”
