CARTERTON

RED CROSS SOCIETY FIRST AID EXAMINATION. (“Times-Age” Special.) The following candidates were successful at the recent first aid examination held by the local sub-centre of the Red Cross Society:— Advanced: Honours, Mrs D. Steffert, Miss E. Ingley; pass, Mrs Harrington. Intermediate: Pass, Miss B. Walsh, Mrs T. Hall, Miss M. Bowie. Junior: Honours, Miss M. Shankland; pass, Mrs D. Vile, Miss M. Knutson. WOMEN’S DIVISION ENJOYABLE GATHERING. There was a large attendance at the Masonic Hall last evening when members of the Social Club of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union held an enjoyable gathering. The programme consisted of two very interesting debates and several concert items. The programme was as follows: —Pianoforte duet, Mrs H. E. Ordish and Miss Ordish: song, Miss Card; recitation, Mrs K. Hodder; pianoforte solo, Miss McGhee; duet, Mesdames Hodder and Linton; recitation, Mrs Stretton; song, Mrs Linton; playette (by five members of the Social Club, entitled “Romance Comes to Cooper Street”), Mesdames Hodder, Corbett, Ordish, Linton and Miss Ordish. In the debate, “Will Land Girls Make Good Wives after the War,” the affirmative was taken by Carterton and the negative by Greytown. The latter were declared the winners. The second debate was between members of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union and the Young Farmers’ Club, the subject being “Are the Youth of today Superior to our Grandparents.” The Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union took the affirmative, but were defeated. Mr Hardy gave every satisfaction as adjudicator. Mrs Walsh referred to the services rendered the club by Mrs Peters, and made her a presentation. A dance, for which Mrs Rogers provided the music, was kept going until midnight. A much appreciated extra was played by Mrs Beu, of Greytown. Mr Hector McKenzie was M.C. Personal Items. Mr George Stefi'ert Junr., of Carter-' ton, underwent an operation for appendicitis at the Greytown Hospital. Success at Show. Mr M. J. Parker, of Dalefield, the well known Holstein breeder, was very successful with his show stock at the Hawera Show on Wednesday and Thursday. He gained 11 first prizes, the championship for male and championship for female, two reserve championships and 4 second prizes. The animals were in charge of Mrs Parker and her son. Intoxication Charge. A first offender was charged at the S.M. Court this morning before Mr P. A. Cole, J.P., with having been drunk. He was convicted and discharged.
