The French National Committee met in Algiers today to consider a report from General Catroux, who is acting on its behalf in Beirut. A communique issued after the meeting stated that the committee had decided to send further instructions to General Catroux emphasising the need for speed in reaching a settlement. In a statement earlier this week, the British Minister of State in the Middle East (Mr R. G. Casey) spoke of the need for' an immediate settlement, granting Lebanese independence. In a message to the French Committee, the United States Government expresses hope for an agreement which will give the Lebanese full independence.
