WOMEN’S INSTITUTE COMPETITION WINNERS (“Times-Age” Special.) At the Carterton Women’s Institute monthly meeting Miss Wolters presided over a good attendance of members. Before commencing the business of the meeting, the president referred to the bereavement which had befallen Mrs V. L. Robinson and members stood in silence as an expression of sympathy. A sub-committee was set up in connection with the proposed party in December for the children of service men. The competitions resulted as follows: Bowl of flowers, Mrs E. M. Gayfer 1, Mrs E. H. Hawker 2, Mrs E. M. Pink 3. Lettuce, Mrs H. Goodin 1, Miss Wolters 2, Mrs G. Steffert 3. Jar' of jam (to be sent to the Service Women’s Club), Mrs Edwards 1, Mrs G. Steffert 2, Mrs H. Goodin 3. t A hamper of jam and other goods was forwarded to the combined Service Women’s Club in Wellington. After afternoon tea had been served the Rev W. F. Stent (who was accompanied by Mrs Stent) gave a most interesting and instructive talk on the growing of gladioli, for which he was thanked. Mrs Stent was presented with a shoulder spray. A feature of the meeting was the effective display of flowers which were used at the Federation meeting the following day. Well Bred Bull Calf. Mr W. J. Thomas, a dairy farmer of Brooklyn Road,. Carterton, this morning received a well-bred Milking Shorthorn bull calf from the well known herd of Mr N. J. Ward, Canvastown, Blenheim. The group herd testing record of Mr Ward’s stock in 194142 was 4521b5. of butterfat and in 194243 4GBlbs. The dam of the bull in question is bred on very similar lines to a Milking Shorthorn that produced 8031bs. of butterfat in 1941, and whose record in 1942 reached 8231b5. of butterfat. The animal, when it arrived, was in good condition and will be an acquisition to Mr Thomas’s already excellent dairy herd. Personal Items. Constable S. Hercock, of Levin, was, a visitor to Carterton yesterday. Mr W. B. Allen, who is now a resident of Palmerston North, is a visitor to Carterton. Mrs Welch, who is employed at the Club Hotel, Carterton, was yesterday admitted to the Greytown Hospital. Gathering at Dalefield. Tonight at the Dalefield Hall the residents of the district will entertain Private Norman Neilsen. Show Points Prizes. The points prizes at the Wairarapa Show were won as follows: —Old Timers’ Cup (dancing), John McMillan, 18 points; Porirua Hospital .Cup (purebred dairy cattle), M. J. Parker, 97 points; W. C. Buchanan Cud (purebred cattle), M. J. Parker, 47" points; Jameson Cup (Jerseys), J. Jameson, 27 points; Moroa Cup (Milking Shorthorns), W. C. Deller, 64 points; Wellington Show Cup (all sheep classes), Wm. Rayner, 51 points; Lankshears Cup (natural condition Southdowns), G. S. McLeod, 65 noints; C. C. Wilkinson Cup (natural condition Romneys), C. C. Wilkinson, 40 points; Co-on. Wholesale Society’s Cup (fat lambs),’J. M. Jury; 28 points; Wairarapa Licensed Victuallers’ Cup (cheese), G. D. Kearney, 284.7 points; Carterton Co-op. Society’s Cup (cooking), Miss C. Bishop, 56 points. Wool Arriving. Despite the unfavourable weather .conditions experienced for shearing, large quantities of wool continue to reach the Carterton railway station for transit to the wool stores in Wellington. W.W.S.A. Dance. The Carterton branch of the W.W.S.A. will hold a dance in the State Theatre on Saturday, December 4, 1943. The proceeds will be devoted to buying garden seeds, manure and equipment with which to carry out the cultivation of two sections of land in Carterton. The dance is for a worthy object, and, doubtless, will be well supported by the general public. A Patriotic Effort The Carterton branch of the W.W.S.A. has commenced the cultivation of two | acre sections of land which are to be put down in vegetables. They wish to thank all those who have rendered valuable assistance in ploughing, discing and preparing these sections and those who have so kindly, donated seeds of all kinds. The organisation would greatly appreciate any further donations of seed or manure and call on the men of Cartertqn to give a helping hand with a few hours of their spare time. All vegetables will be sold and the proceeds handed in to the local Patriotic Fund. The use of the sections was very willingly given by people interested in the girls and their war effort. Miss M. Stent is the secretary of the Carterton W.W.S.A. Social Gathering and Debate Tomorrow evening the Women’s Division Social Club will hold a gathering in the Masonic Hall, Carterton, com,mencing at 8 o’clock. A debate between the members of the Carterton and Grey town Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union will take place, and also a debate between the Carterton Young Farmers’ Club and members of the Carterton Women’s' Division. A dance will follow, for which good music will be supplied. Supper will be provided. Echo of Recent Burglary On Sunday, November 7, a burglary took place at the Regent Theatre, Carterton, when the front door of the theatre was broken open and a sum of money taken. The police arrested two Wellington youths who were later charged with the crime in the S.M. Court in Wellington. Pleading guilty they were remanded for sentence at the Supreme Court in Wellington next week. Rugby Union Ball The Wairarapa Rugby Union will hold a ball in the King’s Theatre, Carterton, on Monday evening. Arrangements are complete for the thorough

enjoyment of patrons and the gathering will undoubtedly be the ball of the season. Excellent music will be provided. The floor will receive special attention and the supper will be a feature and will be presided over by a capable ladies’ committee.
