ST. LUKE’S CHURCH

LADIES’ GUILD GATHERING.

(“Times-Age” Special.)

A very enjoyable time was spent in St. Luke’s Sunday School yesterday afternoon when the Ladies’ Guild held its last meeting for the year. Mrs York presided over a large attendance of members and friends who had helped in any way with the recent “All Nations Fair.” •A bonus of £5 was voted to Mrs Vinsen, organist, for her services during the year.

A motion of sympathy was passed with Mesdames Wood and Knell. The total takings at the recent “All •Nations’ Fair” amounted to £l6B. Mrs York thanked those who had assisted in making the fair such an outstanding success. She thanked Mrs S. Shedden for having trained the Sunday School children who put on such an excellent programme at the fair.

A short musical programme was arranged by Mrs Vinsen as follows: — Pianoforte solos, Mrs J. Robb; Christmas carols sung by the audience, songs by Miss Askew, and the League of Mothers’ choir, rendered,two glees. Mrs York thanked Mr A. H. Bull and Mr F. Dennes for doing the cartage on the day of the fair free of charge. Afternoon tea was handed round by Guild ladies. WOMEN’S DIVISION ENJOYABLE SOCIAL GATHERING. The Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held a most enjoyable social gathering on Wednesday evening in the Odd Fellows’ Hall. Visitors were present from Carterton, Featherston, Martinborough and Tawaha. An apology for absence was received from Mrs Groves, of Masterton, who sent her best wishes. Mr A. Kay, of Carterton, pleased the audience with items on his steel guitar. He was assisted by Mrs Kay in several hill-billy songs. Misses James, Bambry, Jensen and Sorenson, of Carterton, in fancy costume, sang a chorus. Misses James and Jensen gave a tap dance. They were all assisted at the piano by Miss Irwin. Mrs R. Burch, Tawaha, sang several songs. She was accompanied on the piano by Mrs H. G. Carter.

There were several novelty dances held and the winners were Mr and Mrs D. Fairbrother and Misses Mary Carter and Wright. A guessing competition was won by Mr J. Eager and Mrs Vinsen. Mrs Beu (president), thanked Mrs Stephenson for playing the dance music and all those who had contributed to the entertainment. Mr J. F. Thompson, on behalf of the men present, thanked Mrs Beu for the very enjoyable gathering provided. Supper was served. TOWN HALL “PRIDE OF THE YANKEES.” Tomorrow afternoon at the matinee and again in the evening there will be shown the outstanding drama, “Pride of the Yankees,” telling a thrilling story of the events connected with the life of a public hero. Gary Cooper and Teresa Wright are cast in the principal characters.
