PRESSURE OF RUSSIAN DRIVE West and South-West of Kiev GERMAN DEFENSIVE STAND SMASHED BY SOVIET TANKS ENEMY SUPPLY CONVOY & ARMOURED TRAIN CAPTURED LONDON, November 11. The Russians are continuing’ their drive on a broad front west and south-west of Kiev. In the latest fighting in these regions another 100 inhabited places have been liberated. The Germans at some points have suffered heavy defeats. In a large-scale tank battle which has been raging south- ' west of Kiev the Germans, who had been reinforced, held on grimly for 48 hours, but Russian armoured columns finally struck with overwhelming power and crashed through. The offensive is not one of continued thrusts but of sustained pressure and consolidation everywhere. Moscow officially reports that on the route to Korosten the Russians have crossed the River Teteren to capture the town of Ivankova and at another point in the same area pressed back the enemy to the river, capturing a large convoy of supply lorries and an armoured train. The retreating’ Germans, 1500 of whom were killed, blew up 19 of their own tanks. Two thousand Germans were killed in fighting for the town of Gribenki, where a large amount of booty was captured.
